MUGURUZA LOSES IN WUHAN OPEN

World No. 1 GarbineMuguruza has crashed out of the Wuhan Open after her loss to eight seed JelenaOstapenko. The 23-year old Spaniard went through the match requiring treatment for thigh strain. She started well but crashed out later as the Latvian cruised past her to victory.

“I think she played very aggressively. She has a lot of good shots, especially in the right moments. It was three sets and it was tight. I think she’s just playing very good with a lot of confidence,” Muguruza admitted after the game.

The 20-year old French Open champ Ostapenko would now move past the quarter final stage to the last four at the Wuhan Open. Ostapenko continues her winning streak that has stretched to eight games already. She would battle Australian Ashleigh Barty who knocked out Karolina Pliskova.

Before now, Barty had not defeated a top five player but she stunned to knock out Pliskova 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2). She lost three match points in the final set as Pliskova sought a late comeback. However, she was able to finish off the competition in the tie-break.

Maria Sakkari went past Aliza Cornet 7-6 (7-2) 7-5. The Greek set up a semi-final clash with Caroline Garcia. Garcia knocked out Ekaterina Makarova7-6 (7-3) 6-4.

In other events, top seed Alexander Zverev fought hard to overcome Steve Darcis 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). The match took almost three hours as Zverev struggled to see off his opponent who had defeated him once this year. The Belgian frustrated the 20-year old rising German star who is seeking a spot at the ATP Finals. He would face DamirDzumhur next.

The in-form Dzumburbeat Lukas Lacko 6-4 6-3. In another game No. 77-ranked DudiSela defeated MishcaZverev 6-3 5-7 6-2 to progress to the next round where he would face AlexandrDolgopolov.
